Fundamental Movement Skills – The Early Years has been developed by Dr. Graham Dodd and Ms. Heather Mooney, who have been Physical Educators for over 35 years. During this time, they have witnessed the profound impact that movement has on early human life, a fact acknowledged by various professionals and thinkers throughout history.

Movement stimulates sensory responses and evolves from uncoordinated actions to coordinated functions, significantly influencing the body's systems and demonstrating a greater impact on the neurological system and the brain, as supported by modern brain science and MRI technology.

Belonging: Nurtured through directed play and social interaction, Fundamental Movement Skills – The Early Years provides activities that promote trust and a sense of community. Successful attempts at these activities give children important ‘I Can Do’ moments, helping them realize what they are capable of and who they might become.

Being: Fundamental Movement Skills – The Early Years encourages children to explore, seek, and make meaning of the world, engaging in movement activities that help them concentrate, understand themselves, and build relationships.

Becoming: Reflecting the significant growth and development that occurs as children progress through these activities, Fundamental Movement Skills – The Early Years enhances their skills and capabilities. Positive outcomes are observed, supporting their journey of growth and learning.

Fundamental Movement Skills – The Early Years combines gross and fine motor movement and balance to achieve increasingly complex patterns of activity, including dance, creative movement, and fundamental movement skills. With carefully planned movement experiences, children are supported in building their sense of well-being, personal confidence, and involvement as learners by becoming fluid movers and sharpening their cognitive tools.

Our hope is that you will also find joy in teaching these lessons and see positive outcomes for the young children in your care.
